There are those among us who are not like the rest of the population. There are those, all teenagers or younger, who hid who they are, who live on the run, because they must. They are experiments, mutants, hybrids, freaks, all escapees from the Itex Corporation. They have had nowhere safe to live, no real life. Until now. The Lerner School for Gifted Children has been created, mainly for Maximum Ride and her flock, but all other mutants are welcomed.

But they are not alone. Also joining them are regular human beings,students with normal lives, though all have some sort of above average talent, be it for learning, sports, music, drama, or art. The mutants must learn to get along with their new classmates, and trust regular humans, while the normal students must learn not to fear or hate the hybrids, or treat them like freaks.

Things, however, are never that simple. From the ashes of Itex has risen Phoenix Corp, made up of any whitecoats who managed to avoid persecutions for their crimes. Having recaptured some of the escaped experiments, they are now sending them in, not as students, but as spies. They are prepared to take back the others, and bring down Lerner and everything it stands for from the inside-and will stop anyone who stands in their way.
