Standing at the gates of the park Seth Jorden held his skateboard in his hand. He had just barely gotten off the bus and this was his destination. Today was a nice warm day. The perfect day for a walk, or in his case a ride on his skateboard. The park had a nice paved path with some of the smoothest pavement around. It was the perfect place to go skateboarding and that's what Seth intended on doing. Parks had always been a place where he liked to hang out. They were nice, quiet and peaceful. Plus they were never busy or full of people, just the way the young man liked it. They were also good for inspiration. For some odd reason he could always get inspired when he was at a park. Some of the best drawings that he sketched were made here or back in the park in New York city. He wasn't sure why he could do such a good job here but that didn't really matter now. He wasn't here to paint or draw or do anything art related. Right now was only meant for one thing. That one thing was skateboarding.

Gently dropping his skateboard to the ground he stepped onto it and gained his balance. After that he used one of his feet to push against the ground causing him to move forward. Starting off slowly he began to gain speed. Feeling the breeze blow through his hair as he moved along the path, making a quick turn. As he made the turn he began to look around. There appeared to be hardly anyone there today. The area was practically empty and he was fine with that. It just meant that if he messed up or anything no one would see him. It also meant that if he did something awesome they wouldn't see him either, it didn't bother him though. Who cares if they saw him do something cool. He'd still be that geek. Although the title might change to that skateboarding geek but it just wouldn't change that much.

Slowing down a little Seth made sure that his balance was good. Once he was ready he ollied and dragged his feet off the board causing him to do a double kick flip. He had become pretty good at doing those well he was proud of himself. At first he always use to mess up but then he got good at a normal kick flip. Once he perfected that he tried kicking it harder which caused him to do another full flip. Now he just needed to become awesome at that, after that he would have to try and work on triple kick flips. But that probably wouldn't happen for a while yet, it was something to think about though. Finishing his trick he pushed down on the pavement again, moving forward along the path. There was still no one around so maybe he could attempt to do another move. But what should he try this time. Oh! He had an idea. Thankfully no one was around to see this. Getting a good speed he carefully moved on the board. Seth placed his hands on the board and lifted himself in the air. He was now doing a handstand on the moving skateboard. This move was pretty wicked but sorta dangerous. Luckily no one was here because if someone ran into him or distracted him he might fall.

The season is fall, leaves blanketing the ground, the weather getting cold, snow falling….wait! We’re in Florida now. The sun was shining today and unlike other states, it was quite warm out, in fact it was beautiful for a fall day, not too hot. The perfect day for a walk in the park. It was one of Jo’s days off for college so she didn’t have to worry about getting to class on time. Really she should be finishing homework that was assigned but they weren’t due for a couple days and she could always finish them another day. She was a procrastinator which was a burden most of the time rather than a gift. Today Jo decided to bring along her family’s border collie, Pippin, named after a character in Lord of the Rings. Jo didn’t have enough room in her dorm to keep a puppy plus her parents didn’t live far away from here so she could always go home and visit. The dog was just glad to get outside rather then be stuck inside. They walked to the park at a slow rate since every time Pippin would see a hydrant he would sniff it or anything that a dog had peed on for that matter. Once they reached the park, Jo’s arm was sore from the dog pulling so hard the whole walk. She gazed around awed by the changing color of the leaves. The park looked like it was on fire from the way the sun was hitting the red, orange, and yellow leaves of the trees.

Fall w as one of Jo’s favorite seasons mostly because of the colors but it also had a calm feeling to it where spring was alive. Baseball was winding down, trees changing color, but school was just starting up and since it was her first year, it meant that nobody knew her. She could start brand new and that meant that nobody would have to know about her past and nobody would pressure her to do anything she didn’t want to do, think again. Jo knew college was wilder than high school which seemed impossible since high school was crazy enough already. Now college envolved alcohol, drugs, and mostly sex. Jo was one to party so all this seemed exciting and she looked forward to be surprised at all the crazy stuff college kids do. Her cousin had told her this summer all about it, the sorority houses and crazy parties. Count her in. Jo was off in her own little world daydreaming about things she could do when Pippin gave a tug on the leash catching Jo off guard. Her hand slipped from the leash making her loose her balance. She called after to Pippin but he was on a mission and was unstoppable. The dog was running straight for a guy on a skateboard. She tried to yell and warn him but it was too late.

Pippin had plowed right into the guy making him fall into the ground. The dog covering the guys face with a sea of wet kisses his tail wagging like it all was a joke. Jo ran over not really caring if the heels on her boots broke or not. It was her fault that the guy had fallen, if she wouldn’t have let go, none of that would’ve happened. Then again, the guy was cute so maybe it would work out after all. Once she reached him, her hair in her face she gushed “ I’m so sorry, I should’ve had a better grip on the leash. Are you okay?” she grasped the leash firmly in her hand and pulled the dog over to her side. Now she brushed away her hair revealing her warm brown eyes. She had to admit, it was an amusing scene to see, him toppling over but she wouldn’t admit that, it would be rude. “ I’m Kimberly but everyone calls me Jo” she introduced herself waiting for him to do the same. She then spoke up not wanting to leave already “ That was a pretty cool trick you were doing before he knocked you over. Did it take you long to learn how to do that?”

As Seth continued to do a handstand on the moving board he carefully looked around. It was so weird. Here in Miami, Florida it was incredibly warm. But it was fall. It was suppose to be getting colder, snow was suppose to fall soon yet there was no sign of that happening. It was such a change from New York. In New York the winters were freezing cold. Everyone wore big coats to stay warm, they needed tons of heat. This was going to be his first winter away from there. His first winter away from his parents and the cold. In a way he was sorta annoyed. The reason was because during winter there was Christmas. One of his favorite holidays, actually come to think of it Christmas was his favorite holiday. His family always went all out but it was cool because his father was Jewish and his mother was Christian. Because of this he got to experience both kinds of Christmas and Hanukkah. He was never sure what part he liked the best. He couldn't place it. He liked the whole thing, spending time with his family and Krissy's. They always spent Christmas together but this year it was going to be different. He wouldn't be with his parents. He was going to be here in Miami and well he didn't have enough money to fly out to New York for the holidays. He just couldn't afford it. At first he was really depressed about it. Spending the holidays alone was never fun but then when he found out that Kristina was here, well that made it better. Him and her would just spend Christmas together. It was the closest thing he could get to old times. It would be nice.

But then all of his thoughts were shook out of his head when he felt something plow into him. Seth's hands were knocked off of the board and he fell hard onto the pavement. What had hit him? It was some dog, some border collie. "Damn it" He mumbled when he first hit the ground. He then groaned a little due to the fact that it had hurt but then he felt as the dog began to lick his face. For a couple seconds he just laid there on the pavement, letting the dog lick him. His head was paining a little but then he realized that he should probably get up. Slowly he began to sit up and looked down at the dog. The dog was really cute but why did it have to run into him? Oh well, it was lucky that this young man loved animals otherwise he would have been upset with this. He pulled his hand up to his face, gently rubbing the place that would most likely bruise later on but then watched as the dog kept looking at him. The dog looked like it wanted a little love from him. He sighed a little and then moved his hand away from his face and set both hands on the dogs face. "What's your name pup?" He asked and began to pet the dog. Gently stroking it and scratching behind his ears. The dog's tail began to wag back and forth in a happy manner. It made a smile appear on Seth's face. The dog was cute. It was a nice looking animal. He had never had a pet before but always wanted one. His family wasn't able to get one though since they had lived in an apartment for his whole life. How ever he did have a pair of grandparents that lived around the area here. They had a couple dogs that Seth had grown attached to. He usually took them out for walks and played with them. Or at least he used to when he was younger. Seeing this dog inspired him. It gave him the idea that he should call up his grandparents, go visit and see the dogs.

Continuing to pet the dog he noticed as a girl has rushed over to him. It must have been the owner. She gushed and said how sorry she was, hoping that he was okay. It was nice of her to apologize but it wasn't really her fault. Watching as she pulled the dog away from him he slowly stood up. She was quite a bit shorter than him so he had to look down at her. That wasn't knew though. Standing 6'2" he hardly ever met someone taller than himself. He ran a hand through his short brown hair. "I'm alright, my head broke the fall" He said jokingly but could feel his head throbbing. Next time when he tried that trick he would definitely need to be more careful. Leaning over he picked up his skateboard and held it in his hand but then listened as she introduced herself. "Jo.. well I'm Seth. You can't really get any nicknames from that so you'll just have to stick with it" He said with a small smile as he looked at her. She was quite pretty. Maybe her dog running into him wasn't so bad at all. "Why do they call you Jo is your name is Kimberly? Well if you don't mind my asking." He questioned. He was a little curious about this young woman. He hadn't seen her around before, getting to know her would be nice. Well hopefully. Hearing her question he chuckled a little, "Oh well thanks. It didn't really take that long to learn. You basically need to have good balance, well and staying away from running dogs helps too" He said the last part a little jokingly as he looked from her down to the dog again.

Seeing that Jo lived in many different states because her family moved around a lot, she experienced a lot of different climates. She lived in Colorado, living in the mountains where the air was thin made it hard for Jo to breath and wasn’t a place that she wanted to go back too. Then she moved to South Dakota and the endless flat lands. To Jo, it was boring since there wasn’t any tree in sight. One time she was so desperate for vegetation that she attempted planting a tree but the unfertile ground gave it no nutrients so it died. Then she moved to Wisconsin where it had snowed in the winter but was fairly nice in the summer. Not to hot compared to Florida. She had gone cow tipping there since farms were seen a lot in the country. To escape before the farmer caught her she ran straight into the electric fence, not seeing it in the darkness. She had been knocked out and when the farmer found her the next day he had found it amusing and didn’t make her do anything for tipping his cows. She could go on about all the places she had been to but the list would get long and the point was that Florida was one of her favorite places to live. That’s why she decided to go to college here. Yes, hurricanes were common when it came to that time of year but she could always visit relatives in other states during that season or if there is a warning.

She lived in the part of Florida that attracted a lot of visitors in the winter since some people wanted to escape the cold for a while or elderly had a winter home there. She loved watching tourists wander the city with awed looks on there faces. Miami was the city she saw everyday so it didn’t matter to her. It was just another city but to some people it was a site to see. It was weird. When she visited other states she was just like them. Was there a person there looking at her and wondering the same thing? She often liked to view her life as a movie like some characters would do in the books she read. It helped her with thinking of small talk that would make her sound sophisticated or prevent gushing statements that made her sound like a freshman in high school all over again. She didn’t discriminate against younger grades, she even had a best friend that was a sophomore but to her that age was a little inexperienced compared to college level. They just had so many things to learn. When she was a freshman, she was infuriated at the thought of people thinking she was immature but she learned that it was okay. At that age you don’t have to worry about anything. Not hours that you work, multiple huge essay projects due in a few days, cars breaking down, food cost. Jo missed all of that. The only thing that she had to worry about before was what she was going to worry about the next day or if a guy liked her or not. It seems foolish now but at the time it had been important information.

The guy that had gotten knocked over by Pippin didn’t seem to mad at the dog after a few seconds of recovering. She was relieved that he hadn’t blown up at her for losing control of her dog. That told her a lot about him even though he didn’t talk yet. Pippin seemed genuinely happy when she reached the two, the dog wore an innocent look on his face but Pippin knew he did wrong because he kept glancing at Jo with a sorry look on his face and was shying a bit away from her. She could never stay long at the dog for long though. “ This is Pippin. My dad had an obsession of Lord of the Rings for a while. “ she didn’t care if he thought his family was weird but no matter how weird they got, she still loved them. She looked up at Seth since he was taller than her but like him, she was used to it. She laughed when he joked around, she loved people that could crack a joke anywhere anytime “ I see that” she spotted a bump already forming on his head. “ That’s got to hurt” she said before thinking. She listened to him introduce himself, Seth. “ I think I could think of a few. Just give me a few days” she gave him a small but cute smile. Her brown eyes seemed big whenever she looked up at him, it gave her a puppy dog look. “ Oh I don’t mind at all. When I was in kindergarten I couldn’t spell my first name so I tried my middle name Josie. My parents didn’t mind, in fact they thought it was cute but I kept doing the s’s backwards so I just would put Jo on my paper and I guess it kind of stuck after that. Don’t worry, I can write just fine now” she joked. She glanced down at his skateboard, it looked like he used it a lot. “ Oh gosh,. If I tried that I would fall over, I have no balance whatsoever. “ she shrugged “ I guess I didn’t spend enough time on the balance beam in elementary school.” Seth seemed easy to hang around, she could easily get to know him better. “ So are you in college?” she asked curious if he went to the same college as her. He seemed old enough at least to be in college.

Seth had just been knocked off of his skateboard by some dog. His head had hit the pavement pretty hard yet he was not angry. He wasn't angry at the dog or the owner. Most people would be very angry. They would probably rip at the girl because she hadn't had a good enough hold on the leash. Or that she should have been more careful. Something like that or maybe they might have become very rude to her. That wasn't what Seth was going to do though. He didn't feel the need to freak out at her. That's just not how he acted. It wasn't her fault. She had just lost control. It was an honest mistake. Plus really, how was she suppose to know that the dog was going to run over to him and knock him over. It's not like she had planned it all out, that she had meant for the dog to attack him. That would have been very diabolical and she didn't seem evil or anything. So far the young woman seemed pretty nice. Right away she had apologized for what had happened to him. Introduced herself and such. Not a lot of people would do that. They would probably say that they were sorry but after that they would most likely just leave. She hadn't though. She was staying, looking for a bit of conversation it seemed. Almost like she was a little interested in him. Having some company would be rather nice. He didn't mind that she had said. Sure they meant on odd terms but still. He didn't care. He sort of wanted to get to know her. All he knew at the moment was her name. Kimberly except everyone called her Jo.

Hearing her voice again he listened as she explained to him what the dogs name was. "Pippin" He repeated knowing that, that name was really familiar. Then she went on telling him how her father had an obsession with Lord of the Rings. Right. That was where he had her it before. Pippin was one of the characters in it. He was a friend of Frodo's. One of those hobbits from the shire. He had joined their quest. Seth was a big fan of that series. It had been a while since he had read any of the books though. Or since he had watched one of the movies. Maybe he would watch one of the later. After all it would give him something to do plus hearing that, that was the dogs name sort of inspired him to watch one. "Well that's pretty cool. I don't blame him for being obsessed with them, both the movies and the books are pretty awesome" He said giving her a smile as he looked down at Pippin but then at her. Not many people would really admit that right off the bat to someone. Some people might think that having a lord of the rings obsession was weird. Especially if it was your dad who had it. He didn't care though. He thought it was cool. He wouldn't judge anyone, especially if it was about something they liked. Sure people have always made fun of him for the stuff that he likes but he didn't care. They were his interests and he was allowed to like what he wanted to. Those things happened to be musicals and comic books. Sure that may seem a little weird but that was what interested him. It was what he liked. His friends didn't care. They accepted it, some of them even enjoyed that stuff too so it was all good.

When she laughed at his comment he smiled even more. It seemed like she could appreciate a good joke just like he could. That was cool. He wondered if she was a joker like he was. He was basically the king of jokes. He would always crack one. It didn't matter where he was or who he was with. It was just what he did. They were great to lighten the mood or make things less awkward. Plus he loved making people laugh and smile. He felt lucky that he was blessed with such a good sense of humor. "Yeah it does" He said with a slight nod, "I'll be okay though" He assured her, he didn't want her to think that his head was incredibly sore. It was in pain but he didn't want to appear weak or anything. He let out a small chuckle, "Okay then. You get back to me on that, i'm interested to see with what you come up with" He said returning her smile. After that he wondered if she would tell him why everyone calls her Jo. He was curious about that. When she started to speak, beginning her little story about it he listened inattentively. Giving her his full attention. "Aww that's kinda cute but yeah, it's good that you can write now. If you couldn't I'd feel sorta bad for you but then I'd make you get someone to teach you how to write." He said in a joking manor and showed another smile. This girl did seem pretty cool. Sweet too. "Well you never know, maybe some time I'll get you on one of these. We'll see what happens" He said and then heard her next question. He nodded his head, Yeah I am. Just started. What about you?" He asked, she seemed old enough to be in college. Probably the same age as him.

Jo usually didn’t have troubles with controlling Pippin. She had taken Pippin for countless walks ever since Pippin had been brought home from the shelter. She loved the idea of rescuing an animal from the shelter. Those animals were counting on nice people to adopt them because if they didn’t then they would be either shipped off to a different shelter or more likely then not, put to sleep. She winced thinking about the many animals that died because someone was stupid enough to breed dogs. Of course a lot of the times they didn’t want the puppies so they were forced to bring them to shelters around the country. Some lucky animals were adopted like Pippin was. He had been in bad condition when he had come into the shelter. He had been wandering around for a couple of days without food and he was skinny from the lack of food. He had burs in his fur and ticks covering him. Luckily he didn’t have a disease. As soon as Jo had seen him she had known he was the one. She just had to adopt him. His big puppy eyes, she just couldn’t resist. Now he was a happy puppy, knocking people off their skateboards and such. It was amazing how a dog could turn around though, considering his earlier condition a couple years ago. Pippin was now snooping around getting bored of Seth already. He was ready for a new adventure. He had spotted a squirrel and was about to bound off again but Jo was quicker. She grabbed the leash tight and planted her feet. She felt herself lurch forward but she used her body weight against the dog and he didn’t move. She smirked “See what I have to deal with. Maybe we’ll just have to send you back to the shelter” just then the dog whimpered as if he understood “ Just kidding buddy” she patted him scratching him behind his ears. He instantly cheered up. She shook her head” It’s crazy how they seem to understand what you say at times” she spoke mostly to herself while she looked down at Pippin.

She nodded when he heard him say the name aloud “I know it’s weird but I think it’s unique and cute” she grinned letting gout a giggle when Pippin licked Seth’s face from his chin to his forehead when Seth was bending down to pet him” Looks like you found your soul mate” she grinned glancing up at the sky, the sun’s rays glowing off her skin. It felt like it was soaking up in her body, it heated her up. She sighed; it was nice to be outside and not in a classroom. She watched as some kites flew overhead. She smiled gently; it was like her childhood all over again. Flying kites until the wind died down and the kite would come crashing down and would either get tangled in the trees or break from the impact. She decided that she would buy a kite and fly it since it was fall and it got windier this time of the year. She heard him talk surprised by his confession “Really?” she looked at him with an eyebrow raised” You like them too? I like that they are way to long but I have to admit. Their pretty good. “She looked over Seth again as if seeing him for the first time all over again. There was a lot that she didn’t know about him and he seemed decent enough. She was barely counted as decent so that didn’t really matter. She imagined them walking through the mall being goofballs and trying on stuff. Her trying on guys suits and such as he tried on dresses. She laughed at the picture. Yeah, they would be like the two jokesters in class, class clowns. She didn’t mind in fact she loved the thought of it. “So do you have a dog?” she asked keeping the conversation going. The last thing she wanted was it to end.

She had always loved humor from the very beginning when she would go to circuses and the clown would do little tricks or something to make the little kids laugh. She had taken her experience with the clown and started her interest in jokes. She had loved reading jokes. She was the little kid that was always telling knock knock jokes or blurting out something funny in class. It was just how she worked. Some people thought she was annoying but she was just trying to make people’s days brighter. Then one day she watched the show Last Comic Standing and she had always imagined herself going on there and making the audience cry from laughter and wowing the judges. The problem was that she wasn’t a stand up comic she just did it without thinking. She would probably get up on stage and totally forget all her jokes. She loved going to comedians live to compare their jokes to hers. “Well I’m glad.” She answered. She would’ve felt terrible if he had been in so much pain. She bit her lip while she smiled” You’ll be surprised with what I can come up with. Even if I have to turn all stalker on you, I’ll figure one out” she couldn’t figure one out right now but she knew that one day in class one would just pop in her head. That’s how it worked. “Oh well I’m glad to hear that. Least I wouldn’t end up being on the streets with you here. You’ll save me from that” She glanced down at his board she was excited to try it out. Yeah she had stole her brothers once in a while to try it but she had never done anything more than just ride it in a straight line. “Yeah I just started too. Majoring in music. “She said. She wondered if he was in one of her classes but she just didn’t notice. That would be like her because she spaced out a lot in class which wasn’t a healthy habit at all.
